HILLCREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - Home of the Huskies

March…..  The hopeful tail end of winter and the beginning of spring.  It’s important to remember that while at times it can feel like we’re almost through the 2023- 2024 school year, there is still 40% of the school year remaining.  This is the time of year that learning is consolidated.  It’s the time that we see the evidence of the big movement in learning.  It’s an exciting time to be involved in education!  We have finished up our first round of intensive intervention for some of our primary students in language.  We saw many students grow and learn and apply knowledge for reading.  We know that language is the cornerstone for all learning and Hillcrest is incredibly fortunate to have this support. We will start our second block of this valued resource later in the spring.

Extracurriculars at Hillcrest continue to flourish.  The grades 5s and 6s have taken the initiative to start up a number of groups, including cheer and basketball.  Archery is going strong.  The basketball teams have had their first games.  The GSA is active.  The creativity that several classes have shown for furthering a positive school climate is tremendous, from the Bell Let’s Talk signs that are full of compliments to the pink hearts around the school reminding us all to think before speaking and the difference that this can make.

Black Heritage month was full of learning.  Hillcrest’s front lobby had the whose who of Canadian trailblazers and the difference that these people made in Canada and the world.  We shared this on the announcements, celebrating how these trailblazers have and will continue to break down barriers, become the first in their fields, challenge laws and make Canada’s tomorrow better than it is today.  The school reflected this learning throughout.  It’s important to remember that this learning is ongoing.

Hillcrest’s second Wicked Wow Wednesday was awesome.  Many wore pink in support of anti- bullying. Hillcrest’s next Wicked Wow Wednesday falls on March 27th and will be Beach Day.  The fan favorite of “Comfie Cozy Day” will be every Monday and will continue to coincide with pizza day.  FriYAY Funnies will continue as will Hillcrest Pride Fridays (wear your school gear/school colors).  Popcorn Friday will carry on as well.  There is also lots of fundraising happening right now as well.  Be sure to check your email and your student’s bag for information on the Elmira Chicken fundraiser.  Fundsrip is also another gift card fundraiser.  Hillcrest is a happening place!

Always working together to be better.  Your partners in education,

Sue and Mylene
